History

  The Government Degree College at Vizianagaram was started in February 2019 with the efforts of the then MLA, Meesala Geetha. At first, the college functioned in the Government Junior College buildings.

           Dr. Penneti Swapna Haindavi worked as the In-charge Principal in the beginning. With her efforts, the college was later shifted to the Maharaja Government Sanskrit College campus.

          After that, during the time of Dr. P. Anil Kumar, special officer of this college sanctioned 02 teaching posts and 02 non teaching posts and proposals were sent to the government for Regular posts. In February 2023, when Dr. B. Shubha was FAC Principal, the college got approval for one Principal post, 23 teaching posts, and six non-teaching posts on an outsourcing basis.

          In June 2023, the college received its DDO code. Some permanent faculty members joined in August 2023, and more joined in December 2023.

             In October 2024, Dr. K. Rekha became the permanent Principal. Under her leadership, the number of courses increased from seven to ten. Though efforts were begun previously, Dr. Rekha  Kandula also worked actively and restless with officials and public representatives to get a separate building for the college.
Because of these efforts, the then District CollectorDr. B. R. Ambedkar allotted the old DWMA building near MIMS Hospital to the college. Since then, the college has been growing steadily.
        
                  The Government Degree College, Vizianagaram town received the 'interrm award' in 2023 under the auspices of the Higher education department of Andhra Pradesh.At that time Dr. B.Subba acted as the incharge principle and Mr. karrothu Srinivasa Rao acted as  the mentor.  Sobhana Sivakumar, a student of the 2023 batch, receiving his appointment order as a primary teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya from the hands of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji is a matter of great pride of the college.

            The college is also doing well in sports. Students have won first prizes in running and high jump at university and state levels. Some students have also taken part in national-level competitions.  Placements have been coming every year since the first outgoing match of 2022 

         In the academic year 2025–26, the college achieved good results in placements. Five students from Computer Science and five from Chemistry were selected through campus placements.

        Overall, the college is growing step by step and is working towards better education and opportunities for students.
